On the Road to Emmaus

Hi! Thanks for coming by.

What, you may be asking, is the significance of the name of this blog?

What happened on the road to Emmaus?

You can read the account of what happened on the road to Emmaus in the Bible. It’s found in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 24, verses13-35 (also written as Luke 24:13-35). Here’s my summary:

Later on the day of Jesus’ resurrection, two of his followers were walking from Jerusalem to the neighboring town of Emmaus (about 7 miles away). While they traveled, they were talking about all the events that had transpired over the last few days. The recently resurrected Jesus joined them en route, but they didn’t recognize him. He inquired as to what they were discussing between themselves.

One of the followers, whose name was Cleopas, brought their new fellow traveler up to date; how Jesus was a great prophet of God, and was condemned by the Jewish religious leaders and rulers, was crucified and killed. He went on to explain that they had hoped Jesus would be the one to redeem Israel, and that it had been three days since the incidents had occurred. He further explained that some women, who were also followers of Jesus, reported that they had, early that same morning, found the tomb empty and had seen a vision of angels at the tomb who told them that Jesus was alive. Cleopas said that other disciples went to the tomb and found it like the women had claimed.

The unrecognized, freshly resurrected Jesus rebuked Cleopas and the other disciple, telling them how the Messiah had to suffer and be glorified. Then, starting with Moses and the Prophets, Jesus interpreted for them all the scriptures concerning himself. It wasn’t until later that evening, when Jesus prayed and broke bread with Cleopas and the other disciple, that they recognized him for who he was.

Thanks again for stopping by. Let’s take a walk on the road to Emmaus and discuss the risen Lord together.
